MUSIC

The most popular music the Canadian Kashubs listen to is the Old Time Kashubian fiddle. We have many cd’s recorded of this music. We are still playing those tunes that was brought over from Kaszebe in 1858. Sixth & seventh generation Kashubs still playing these tunes. This music has been played at many Kashubian weddings, parties and showcased at our annual Kashub Day festival which happens on the first Saturday of May. You can also hear this music on our Radio station called RADIO KASZEBE. The songs of the Canadian Kashubs are song in the Polish & Kashubian languages. Because our ancestors have been influenced by the Polish culture so much. The largest stress on the Kashubian culture today is Polanization. Lots of this music was recorded by John Glofcheskie in the mid 70’s and these cd’s are available from the Wilno Heritage Society. Today, no one sings these traditional songs, the young today write songs about our heritage and the Kashub region and is all done in the English language. While the Kashubs in Kaszebe created new music song in the Kashubian language, the Canadian Kashubs missed out on this. We hope to have our new language teacher come and teach us these new songs of today’s Kaszebe. There is no better way to learn the language and that is to sing. The Kashubs here were also influenced by the Irish and played many of their fiddle tunes.
